In the US, the entrée is another term for the main course of a meal or the protein component of a plate.

In Europe, entree refers to a separate course served before the main course.

An entree can be any of the following:

  • vegetable dish
  • eggs
  • starch
  • fish, shellfish or mollusk
  • white meat or poultry
  • red meat or game
  • offal
