Glossary Term:Tish

what is a tish
Yiddish for table; the pre-ceremony room where the ketubah is signed

The word tish literally means table in Yiddish but also refers to the pre-ceremony room or informal reception where the ketubah is signed.

At the tish, the groom and his male friends and family gather around a table, where he is challenged to lecture on the Torah while his guests tease and interrupt him. Usually there are drinks and hors d’ouevres available, too.

Meanwhile, the bride is entertained in a separate room by her female friends and family.
